We often use the word “triggered” to describe emotional reactions—but what’s actually happening goes deeper than that.
A trigger isn’t just about the current moment.
It’s your system responding to something familiar.
Something that feels like:
- rejection
- being misunderstood
- not being in control
- not feeling safe
Even if the situation in front of you isn’t objectively threatening, your body reacts as if it is.
That’s why the reaction can feel:
- intense
- immediate
- hard to control
Understanding this shifts the question from:
“Why am I reacting like this?”
to:
“What is this reminding my system of?”
From there, the work becomes less about suppressing the reaction—
and more about learning how to regulate and respond differently.
